Dirty Dancing

Hi everyone and welcome to my film fanatic blog.  My name is Lyndsay Armstrong, I am 26 years old and a full time student from Girvan in South Ayrshire.  I am currently in my 3rd year of  studying for a Business degree at the University of the West of Scotland.

As part of our Digital Marketing class, we have to write 8 different blogs.  My blogs are going to be based on 8 of my favourite all time films.  My first blog is going to be on a film I have loved for years and have watched over and over again many times....Dirty Dancing.

Dirty Dancing is well known for having the very popular phrase “Nobody puts Baby in a corner”.  This film is set in the early 60’s in a holiday resort in New York’s Catskill Mountains.  The ‘Houseman’ family travel to the holiday resort to enjoy a relaxing holiday.  The Houseman’s youngest daughter Frances “Baby” Houseman (Jennifer Grey) is a smart young girl and her father has high expectations for her to go to college and save the world before marrying a doctor, just like he is.

Baby and her older sister Lisa (Jane Brucker) do not get along very well and the holiday resort is mostly full of older guests so Baby gets bored and decides to go for a walk.  Baby hears lots of music and noise coming from the employee’s dorm.  While walking up to the party she meets a man carrying lots of watermelons, so she offers to help him.  They then go into the party where Baby is surrounded by lots of employees dancing exotically in particular Johnny (Patrick Swayze) and Penny (Cynthia Rodes).  Baby is memorised by Johnny and falls for him and wants to be around him all the time.

Penny finds out she is pregnant so she can no longer be Johnny’s dance partner.  Baby then offers to step in and learn the routine so Johnny can still do his routine at a local hotel which they do every year.  Baby does not tell her family she has been dancing with Johnny as her father would not approve.  Meanwhile Penny is trying to gather money for an abortion, Baby then goes to her father and asks for money to help her friend but does not tell her father what it is for.  Baby gets the money so Penny gets the abortion but there is problems with the procedure so Baby gets her father to come and help Penny since he is a doctor.

Johnny and Baby get closer and end up falling in love.  They continue dancing together and Baby becomes a really good dancer.  They perform at the hotel and when they come back they see Penny is in trouble.  Baby’s dad thinks Johnny is the one who got Penny pregnant so he thinks he is nothing but trouble and warns his daughter to stay away from him.  Johnny gets sacked from the holiday resort after he is accused of stealing a wallet between 1.30 am and 4.00am.  Baby knows that Johnny did not steal the wallet and she was with him the whole night.  Baby’s father is angry when he finds this out and he decides the family are leaving the resort.

Johnny and Baby have an emotional goodbye as Johnny has to leave the camp. At the end of the show, Johnny also does the last dance of the season but this year he got told it was changed and he wasn’t to do the end show anymore.  Lisa is in the end of the show signing and Baby and her mum and dad are sitting at a table watching.  Johnny then walks through the door and walks up to Baby’s table and says “Nobody puts Baby in a corner”.  Johnny and Baby then continue to do the last dance of the season and Baby’s dad realises he was wrong about Johnny.  In the end everyone is up dancing and enjoying themselves.
