The Barden Bella’s are a popular all-female a cappella group
at Barden University. The film starts
with the Barden Bella’s at the national a cappella competition and they are
performing well and putting on a good show until their lead singer Aubrey Posen
(Anna Camp) vomits during her solo act.
This leads to them losing the competition and no popular girls want to
audition to be a Bella any more. The Bella’s try their best to get girls to
audition but they end up getting girls who all look different auditioning (some
who are not very good at signing). As no
other girls are interested, Aubrey has to take all the mix bunch of girls that
auditioned.
Freshman Becca Mitchell (Anna Kendrick) really does not want
to attend university as she wants to be a music producer in Los Angeles but her
dad who is a professor at the university is forcing her to go. Becca and her father Dr Mitchell (John
Benjamin Hickey) do not have a good relationship and want different things in
life. While at university Becca spends
her time making mash ups of different songs and takes up an internship at the
local radio station where she becomes friends with Jesse (Skylar Astin). Becca’s dad realises she has been skipping
her classes so he proposes an idea to her which is ‘if she joins a club and
still does not want to remain at college after one year, he will allow her to
leave college, and will pay for her to go to Los Angeles to pursue her music
career’. Becca agrees to this idea and
with some persuasion from the co leader of the Barden Bella’s - Chloe Beale
(Brittany Snow) she decides to join the group.
Aubrey and Becca do not get off to a good start as Aubrey does not think
it is a good idea to recruit Becca.
While Becca is now a Barden Bella, her friend Jesse has
joined the Bella’s all male rival group, the Treble makers but his best friend
Benji (Ben Platt) was rejected from the group as they thought he was
weird. The Bella’s first competition
together as a new group is a disaster as Aubrey insists the group do the same routine
that they did when she was sick and embarrassed herself. The Bella’s place second in the competition
and everyone is happy until a small fight breaks out between some a cappella
groups. Becca tries to help fat Amy
(Rebel Wilson) but ends up smashing a window with a trophy and ends up getting
arrested. Jesse phones Becca’s father to
help bail her out of jail. He is mad and
tells Becca he will no longer be paying for to move to LA.
At the semi-finals, Becca notices the crowd are getting bored of the same old routine so she decides to change it up a bit by adding in one of her own tracks that she has been working on. This confuses some members of the group so they do not do very well, however the get third place. Aubrey gets mad with Becca so Becca decides to quit. The Footnotes then get disqualified from the competition and the Bella’s get invited back to take part instead. During rehearsals the group starts to fall apart and turn on each other as most of the group know if they want to win then they need Becca back. Becca goes to where the Bella’s are practising to apologise and ask for another chance which after a while Aubrey agrees to. All the Bella’s sit down together and tell each other secrets about themselves. The group also decide to let Becca take control as she has a more modern style of music.
The final of the
competition begins and the Bella’s have a brand new arrangement which the crowd
really seem to enjoy. The Treble makers
also have a good routine so the completion is close between them both. Becca sings a song from Jesse’s favourite
film to apologise to him, they end up kissing and all is forgiven. In the end the Bella’s win the competition
and auditions for new members takes place
